Group Short Term Disability programs can be non-contributory (employer paid) or voluntary (paid by the employee).  Employees will be provided with a benefit after the elimination period.  If there is a claim, this income benefit usually lasts for a short time period such as 90 days or 180 days.

Group Long Term Disability programs provide an income benefit from a short period of time after the loss of earnings all the way through normal retirement age.  This coverage can be paired with Short Term Disability Insurance and can also be non-contributory or voluntary.
